3. Abdominal Pain
Diverticulitis will usually result in abdominal pain due to the pressure, inflammation, or injury that may be present in the affected area of the colon. Other symptoms that usually accompany abdominal pain include belching, bloating, indigestion, constipation, and discomfort in the pelvic area.
Diverticulitis causes distention or stretching of the colon as digestive products are trapped by the narrowed or inflamed colon. Spasms are also a symptom of diverticulitis and they cause intermittent pain to the patient. Pain associated with Diverticulitis is usually felt to the left of the lower abdomen. It is in this region that the colon is located.
To differential abdominal pain from diverticulitis from other abdominal pains, pay attention to the nature of the pain. Pain resulting from obstruction of the intestines usually occurs in waves as the muscles of the intestines contract and expands. It’s the kind of pain someone having cramps would feel except that it is localized to the left of the lower abdomen.
