3. Scallops
If you are suffering from a gout flare-up, make sure that you cut back on all types of seafood. Seafood such as scallops has a high amount of purines. As mentioned, purines are broken down into uric acid by the body. When there is too much uric acid in the body, gout symptoms may occur.
When you are not in the middle of a flare-up, it is okay to eat a serving or so of scallops as you have a bit more freedom with your choices of food when your symptoms are not present. However, if you are suffering from regular flare-ups, it is best to avoid eating scallops as they could make the symptoms even worse. Even when you are not having any symptoms, it is still best to limit the number of scallops and meat that you eat to four to six ounces at most per day.
