12 Common Symptoms of a Vitamin D Deficiency

New Articles: Symptoms March 2, 2018

There are many essential vitamins that people should be receiving on a daily basis. Of them, vitamin D is one of the most important, but it is often overlooked.

When exposed to sunlight, the body naturally produces vitamin D, which is why it is commonly called “the sunshine vitamin”. It’s also naturally occurring in some foods, or can be obtained via supplements. Vitamin D aids in the performance of multiple bodily functions.

Among the most notable functions, vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus. It also helps the immune system function properly. As such, “the sunshine vitamin” helps to keep both bones and teeth strong, and helps to ward off illnesses. It’s also important for vital organs, such as the brain and the heart.

If you aren’t getting enough vitamin D, you will start to notice adverse effects. Here are 12 signs that indicate a vitamin D deficiency.

1. Excessive fatigue.

Feeling tired isn’t uncommon for most people, and fatigue isn’t always an indication of a vitamin D deficiency. However, if you are feeling super sluggish, no matter how much sleep you are getting, there is definitely a chance that you are not getting enough of this vital nutrient.

Various studies have found that individuals with particularly low vitamin D levels feel chronically fatigued. There are various other conditions that are associated with chronic fatigue; however, since this symptom is also a side effect of a vitamin D deficiency, if you are feeling overly tired for a prolonged amount of time, no matter how much sleep you are getting, it’s worth having your vitamin D levels investigated.

If your vitamin D levels really are low, you can easily solve the problem by taking a vitamin D supplement, eating more foods that contain the vitamin, or getting more sun.
