16 Subtle Signs You Might Have a Thyroid Problem

New Articles: Conditions February 28, 2018

The thyroid – a butterfly-shaped gland situated in the front of the throat – may be small, but it does a huge job for your body. In fact, it has been argued that it plays the most powerful part of the body. That’s because it produces and stores hormones that impact how pretty much every organ in the human body operates. For example, thyroid hormones help to regulate the metabolic rate of the body, muscle control, digestion, bone maintenance, and even the development of the brain.

Since the thyroid is such a versatile gland, if problems arise, you could start feeling the effects in a number of ways. Problems with the thyroid can include hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). A physical examination and a blood test can be used to determine issues with the thyroid. If you’re experiencing any of these 16 symptoms, you should consider having it checked.

1. Feelings of depression

It’s not unusual to feel a little blue once in a while. The trials and tribulations of everyday life, difficulties with relationships, work, and even the weather are all things that can make you feel down in the dumps. However, if you are feeling more depressed than usual, the feeling has come on suddenly, and you can’t seem to snap out of it, it could be a sign that you are experiencing issues with your thyroid.

Depression is a symptom that is commonly associated with hypothyroidism or an overactive thyroid. It’s believed that the decreased production of thyroid hormones can have an effect on serotonin, those “feel good” hormones that impact your mood. If your thyroid isn’t producing enough hormones, you could definitely start to feel a noticeable decrease in your general mood, your happiness, and your outlook on life. If depression persists, see a doctor.
