2. Pain
Kidney disease can also cause acute or chronic pain, which will be felt around the back and sides. The kidneys are shaped like beans and are located against the back muscles at the upper portion of the abdominal cavity. They sit on either side of the spine opposite from one another. What many people aren’t aware of is that the right kidney actually sits very slightly lower, which is in order to make room for the liver above it.
Kidney disease doesn’t always cause pain, but if it does then you will likely notice this sensation in that specific region. You might find that your sides hurt, or that you have back pain and in some cases, you might even notice the disparity in height.
Often the pain might also be felt on just one side. This is the fortunate thing about our kidneys: we have two meaning that if one should completely cease functioning, we will have a backup!
