7. Rest
Rest is an important way to address any form of illness. Your immune system, like all of the different systems in your body, requires energy in order to operate at its fullest. Therefore, when you rest, you can help to provide more energy to that immune system so that you will be able to heal.
Just as important is to rest mentally. Stress causes the redirection of blood and energy away from ‘non-critical’ systems and to the muscles and the brain. This only makes sense, seeing as the brain and muscles are far more useful systems than digestion and immune function when your body is under extreme physical threat!
Stress, therefore, suppresses the immune system, and this is why it can be so harmful to your recovery from an infection affecting the throat and windpipes.
At the same time, it’s also important to rest the throat itself. This means you should avoid speaking for long periods of time – perhaps try unplugging your phone!
