7. Wind
Trapped air is another common cause of stomach pain and can itself be an indicator of a range of other conditions. Here, the air is trapped in the stomach along with your food and this needs to escape somehow. This can place pressure on the stomach, causing painful and bloated sensations in the stomach.
Other symptoms of wind include a need to belch or pass wind and a grumbling sensation in the stomach. While there are several causes for wind, one of the more common of these is eating too quickly, during which time you might swallow too much air at the same time.
Wind can also be caused by bacteria, which can produce gasses in the stomach. Likewise, it can be the result of food being broken down and releasing cases such as methane. Other foods containing gas – such as carbonated drinks and alcohol – might also be responsible. As we will see in a moment, this can also be tied to allergies and intolerances. Children will regularly experience wind and gas and this can be eased by ‘burping them’.
Another way to provide temporary relief for sufferers of any age is to use a hot water bottle.
