4. Local Abscess
An abscess refers to the puss that collects within a body tissue due to a medical complication. An abscess usually results from bacterial infections. In some rare instances, parasites may also cause an abscess.
The bacteria or parasites infect the large intestines through the weak spots created on the walls of the colon by diverticulitis. The buildup of digestive products in the colon and the slow bowel movements puts immense pressure on the colon and may lead to the abrasion of the walls of the colon thereby giving way to bacteria and parasites.
It is not always apparent to a patient with diverticulitis that they have colon abscess until they spot puss or blood in their stool. The symptoms that accompany abscess due to diverticulitis can also be associated with those of other conditions such as the flu. Symptoms associated with colon abscess include puss in stool, pain in the lower abdomen, chills, fever, lower appetite, and diarrhea or constipation.
