4. Figs
Figs are a sweet fruit that is a favorite in Middle Eastern and Southern European dishes. They can be eaten fresh, but are more widely available and are richer in fiber in their dried form. A single fresh fig contains 6% of the needed daily fiber, but if consumed dry, ⅓ cup of figs can provide 20% of the daily allowance of fiber. Fresh figs are highly perishable, so dried figs have the added advantage of lasting longer and are easy to store.
Make fig bars with oats and nuts for a high-fiber sweet dessert that is packed with nutrients. In addition to fiber, figs also contain large amounts of potassium which helps regulate the heartbeat and can ease muscle aches and pains. In addition, figs have calcium which can help fight bone deterioration with age. Bring a bag of figs and nuts to fight hunger while you travel or work.
